Dress Code Decoded

What is "black tie"?

Black tie is a dress code for social functions that start after 6 p.m., and basically translates to “this party is fancy and men should wear tuxedos.” While the intricacies of black tie formal wear applies more to men than to women, it’s still important to understand that your attire should definitely be appropriate.

Recommended wear

Men: Tuxedos/suits. A dress shirt, with the optional addition of a silk handkerchief in the pocket, and cuff links is recommended. A tie or bow tie should complete this look.

Women: Floor length evening dress. Sophisticated and elegant. An extremely fancy cocktail dress, that is longer than knee length, can be a more modern take on ‘black tie'. Chic separates, such as a  silk blouse with a full satin skirt or a formal pantsuit, is another acceptable option.
